Welcome to Holland Intermodal, the portal for all transport modalities in The Netherlands. This website provides access to the websites of the information centres of each modality or the branch organisation.

The Netherlands is a small country, but with a relative large transport industry and a number of (large) ports. As a result, the Netherlands is a gateway for freight. In order to minimise the impact of these large freight flows on the environment, all modalities should be used.

Each transport mode has its own market and target group. One mode of transport is not necessarily better than another. Because of the expected growth in demand for transport, it is important to use the the possibilities of the total transport system. The policy of the Ministry of Transport in the Netherlands is to ensure that all modalities can be utilised a hundred percent. The choice which modality will be used is up to the market. It is up to the shippers and carriers to choose the best means of transport or a combination of transport modes. And it is up to the promotion centres for inland shipping, rail cargo and shortsea to provide the market players with all information necessary to make a well-substantiated decision.

Policy on intermodal transport is aimed at optimising and integrating the various links in the transport chain.

The aim of the EU Commission's policy on intermodal freight transport is to support the efficient door-to-door movement of goods, using two or more modes of transport, in an integrated transport chain. Each mode of transport has its own advantages e.g. potential capacity, high levels of safety, flexibility, low energy consumption, low environmental impact. Intermodal transport allows each mode to play its role in building transport chains which overall are more efficient, cost effective and sustainable.

In order to shift the balance between the modes, the EU White Paper proposes to achieve this by improving the performance of the alternatives to road transport - short sea shipping, rail and inland waterway. Actions will hence focus on supporting alternatives to road transport particularly for the "long haul" section of journeys. This not only reduces congestion, but also improves road safety and is good for the environment.
